A day in the life
The avocado tree in our yard is fruiting.
While this may not seem a ground breaking announcement, I feel compelled to share my state of mind with you all, my dear and not so near(by) friends.
Actually, it is more the sound of the heavily fruiting tree that has given me cause to write. Don’t be misled, the tree is not burping its fruits out, rather it is pelting the roof of my lab and making dents in the lawn with great aplomb. It never really occurred to me how substantial a fruit the avocado is, I mean, I have always enjoyed it when consuming it, and I do try to employ it in my culinary efforts when it is made available to me. But this sort of violent interaction with a fruit is somewhat novel to me.
I am going through a period of lab work (sounds like some temporary mental affliction), and I have been up late preferring working in the cool of the night rather than the heat of day. So it is most unnerving hearing the more than occasional plonkety-plonk on the roof and the heart-stopping guhdooom (bigger fruits), that has made me drop my forceps into the ethanol more than once.
Why, you ask, have I my lab under a freaking avocado tree? It just so happens that my lab is actually a converted tool shed, and in the past those tools did not so much mind the falling fruit. Also, the tree has grown to a menacing 25m which makes the retrieving of the larger avocados somewhat tricky. So, that is all I wanted to share; my lamentation on the state of my nerves as I imagine myself being whumped on the head as I head to my lab or lying under the rubble of my roof as it caves in due to the weight of falling avocados. But have no fear my friends, I will eat my way out if I have to and continue collecting my ants even with a dent in my head. So, next time you all enjoy the soft creamy texture of your supermarket bought avocados, think of your dear friend Nihara toiling away under the avocado tree.
At least the lab isn’t under a coconut tree:)
