Its finally winter in Perth. And that means rain, much needed rain of course, but i still feel the need to complain about the wet blanket that is winter rain. Of course i am no stranger to seemingly interminable rain but its the cold toes that always get me grumpy. I have even been considering buying the all-australian ugg boot. I have resisted these past 6 years of living in this sheep-ridden country but i might finally cave. It is a sheep skin boot (with the fur on the inside- i think the sheep would be a lot warmer if they too, wore their fur on the inside, but then again i dont know many sheep who complain 'bout the cold, in fact i dont think i know any sheep personally...i feel this is a bit sheepist but they are not a very talkative lot...however, i digress) that many an australian will wear. Its mostly home-wear butsome choose to go out in them as well; wearing cave-man boots in public can have its appeal to some. Anyway, i have not as yet purchased these toe warmers as i am trying to convince myself that three pairs of socks should be adequate. ESPECIALLY SINCE PERTH ISNT THAT COLD!!!! I wore a skirt WITHOUT stockings today (Yes, i admit to being a hussy), it was simply warm enough. And that is the problem, i think i dress inappropriately for cold weather in this country. Since the weather doesnt seem that cold during the day, one doesnt often take big winter jackets out for the evening or put the heater on in the house or stop wearing shorts and flip-flops. When i was in Tokyo, i used to wear about three layers of clothes during winter, together with ankle length jackets with faux fur collars, woolen gloves, a hat and thick socks AND I was STILL cold. So i think the problem is that i think i should harden up here and take the oh-so-brief winter on the chin and deal with cold tootsies. But then again, perhaps i should help the aussie economy and consume some aussie goods....We shall see how i fare.
Anyway, the cold hasnt stopped me nor other hardy souls from braving the wet and the cold to enjoy a glass of red cordial in the evening. This is a Dixieland jazz bar in Perth- Who would have thunkit? These guys have been playing jazz for a few decades and this is one of the places they have their shows, a basement somewhere in the city. It was fun, people danced and were very merry.
