Driving 180 km to the south takes roughly 5 and half hours in Sri Lanka. Worth it though.

A beach in Tangalle was coloured an unusual red (most lankan beaches are white or yellow). The hotel proprieters said this happens at this time of year when the waves are particularly rough- I am assuming that the heavy waves have just eroded off the white sand during this time exposing the reddish tinted sand below. The granite rocks around the beach have a pinkish hue. The white sand probably get re-deposited after the waves calm down and build up over the year.
Just an assumption though- any beach erosion specialists out there with suggestions?
We visited a major hindhu/buddhist temple in the south called Kathargama Devale. There were a lot of fruit offerings and breaking of coconuts- Not to worry, not much goes to waste- we get half the fruit, the temple the other half, and the cows get the scraps.

We also went to one of our safari parks, Yala National Park. Only one quarter of the park is open to the public and we just got in before the park shuts down for the dry season. The only way to get around is in an old jeep, seemed to be a requirement for all visitors This is the only area where you go across some boulders, the rest of the way you have to stick to paths and no one can get out of the vehicles. With good reason, there being elephants running around....

We werent expecting much but we did see a lot of peacocks, quite a few crocs and wild boar.

But the bonus was this...Look at the centre of the photo

Oh yeah!! This character was hanging out in the bush with a mate or a junior, there were a few jeeps around waiting for it to come out but it just walked around the edge of the path. Our guide knew it was there because of this-

Cool huh? They dont appear to be too bothered by the presence of jeeps and humans, there are certainly plenty of deer and sambar to eat so they seem to stick around this part of the park.
All up it was lovely to go to a part of the island that i had never been to before. Next trip? East coast here i come!!!! Anyone want to join?
